Used to be a 5-star game, but this last update is a final step too far with the monetization of the game. I've seen the game go from cosmetic-only purchases to optional boosts to screwing over purchasers (packs don't carry over between major updates) to micro transactions and locking a previously free level behind a purchase. Games with ads are at least honest about it. It's a decent game with some really good ideas.

About reached the max after 30 days PRIOR to the update. They changed some of the mechanics, but it's definitely a nice idle game. Unsure of time frame for a play through from post update, but once you hit a certain point (not yet finished post update), it looks like you have to purchase the "Omega" pack/bundle to continue with storyline. I'm unsure if I will, but based on the game, I will probably purchase the extension. It's less appealing to me, but maybe for others, the storyline is nice.

As others write, the latest update has ruined the experience. Monetizing what used to be free content and removing features that people have paid for is egregious. I'm all for paying for games, if they want to treat the first few chapters as a sort of demo before you buy the full game, that's fine, but do it honestly. This ain't it.
